Chalkboard Summer Countdown

With the school year drawing to a close, we thought it might be helpful to share some teacher appreciation ideas this week. From teacher gifts, to thank you cards, to classroom treats we’ve got you covered! Sit back and enjoy the inspiration.

Hello!  Jennie McGarvey here to share with you a fun and interactive teacher gift. I have three school aged sons and over the years I’ve tried to think of gifts for their teachers that are useful, creative and maybe even something the whole class could have fun with.  I’m usually not all that successful, but this year I think I have figured something out.

I thought it would be fun to create cute classroom decor where the kids and the teacher could countdown to those fun summer days!  (You know by now we’re all on countdown for those carefree days!)
So, to start I used a chalkboard that I got for a couple of dollars.  Then, I gathered up a few items.  I started with a sheet of 6×6 paper from the Cake and Candles pad, a sheet from the 6×6 Clearly Bold pad, one of the Lifestyle Crafts Inverted Circles nesting dies and the Evolution Advanced.
After I had cut the inverted circle and the plain circle using the Evolution Advanced, I got out the Script Sew Easy template and punched out the word HAPPY.  I used yellow embroidery floss (3 strands) to make the word visible.
Once the stitching was complete, I used foam adhesive to adhere the layers together.
Once that was complete, it was time to focus on the chalkboard.  I printed out the sentiment I wanted on the chalkboard.
On the BACK of the paper, I rubbed a piece of chalk on the paper.  Then, I layered the paper on top of the chalkboard so I could see the writing.  With a  ball point pen, I traced the outline of the letters.  (On the paper)  When I was finished I removed the paper and I could see the outline of the alphas, which I filled in with the chalk.
Once that was finished, I added a couple of enamel shapes for a bit of decoration.
The point of this was for it to NOT appear perfect.  It is going to hang in a classroom!  I want a child to be able to change the number of days or the message, if that is what is needed.  If I used a chalk marker – it would appear really professional, but not be as easily adaptable to the needs of the classroom.
Now, this wouldn’t be complete without a card to give along with it. Enter the Hello, Darling collection and the new Denim Blues collection for a beautiful and heartfelt card any teacher would be happy to receive!
