Honeycomb Card & Decoration

Hello, Samantha with you today. I really can’t say enough about how much I love the DIY Party collection. It makes throwing parties with a handmade touch super easy…but that’s not all it can do. Today I’m sharing how it can send fun wishes even when you can’t be there. I don’t just have some cards to show you today, I’m going to show you how you can make a honeycomb card and decoration to send for special occasions.

The top half of the photo above shows what the cards look like when they are closed. The one on the left can be sent for a wedding or engagement, while the one on the right is meant for a birthday celebration. The bottom half of the photo shows what happens when the recipient opens the card. It’s not just a card, but a decoration, too! Want to know a secret? This fun card is easy to make!

I started with the DIY Party 12 x 12 paper pad, DIY Honeycomb Stencils and DIY Large Honeycomb Pads (the small ones will work well too depending on how large you want to make your decoration).

Decide which template shape you want to use (in the photo above I’m using the balloon template), and the size you want to make (here I used the 6”). Trace your shape, making sure your template edge is placed along the side of the honeycomb paper that has the glued edge. Trace your shape and cut it out.

Next, you’ll use the same template with some DIY patterned paper to trace and cut out some matching paper. Cut out one piece of patterned paper for both the front and back side that are the same size as the honeycomb paper. For extra layers you can also trace and cut out additional paper one size down on the template. Decorate and embellish your paper like you would a regular card.

For the congratulations card I used the Evolution with the Letterpress Base and the Clearly Posh Letterpress Plates to create the sentiment and a diamond embellishment. For the birthday card I used a die cut from Cakes and Candles. The patterned paper on the back side of the card I left unembellished, because that is the space I will use for writing personal note to the recipient.

Now it’s time to assemble the card. I placed 2 pieces of baker’s twine on each side, with the long tails hanging out over the side of the honeycomb that opens up. I covered the twine with Sticky Thumb Double-Sided Super Sticky Red Tape. This tape holds the twine in place and will hold your card front to the honeycomb paper. When opened, the twine hanging out from under the card front can be tied together to keep the honeycomb decoration open.

I finished up these special cards with some custom made envelopes using the 1-2-3 Punch Board.

Did you know that We R Memory Keepers has an Envelope Generator App? It’s a free app that makes creating envelopes of any size even easier. You can see from the screen shot above that all I had to do was type in the measurements of my finished card (the measurements above were the birthday card), and it gives me the measurements I need to create an envelope with the 1-2-3 Punch Board or the Envelope Punch Board.

I love that with a little bit of DIY Party Honeycomb Paper, you can make a simple card into a little something special – a card and a decoration that the recipient can enjoy! What kind of occasion would you send one of these honeycomb cards and decorations for? I’d love to hear your creative ideas!

    • Thanks, Kelly! You’ll love the envelope app. It makes using the envelope punch board and 1-2-3 punch board even easier.
