DIY Planner/Journal Clips

Hi all!  Rebecca with you today, back for my second We R post.  I’m giving you a peek into my Inspiration journal today, which is what I use to keep track of my “current favorites,” whether they be colors, tools, supplies, or just about anything else I use in paper crafting.

The main tool I used today was the Journal Guide, and I used it both on and ‘off’ the pages!  It’s a handy tool for drawing circles, banners, and lists right on your pages, but you can also use it for creating pockets, which is what I did.  Then I took those pockets and turned them into clips, allowing me to move them around, add to them, and remove them from the book for easier note-taking.

It’s really easy to create the pockets.  I used Amy Tangerine patterned papers trimmed down to 5” W x 3” H, and 5” W x 4” H. Then you simply fold them around the long end of the Guide and tape closed.  To seal the bottom of the pocket, fold a portion of the bottom edge up and tape again.

I added some simple embellishments using the Journal Guide.  This time I used the pointed arrow stencils to create banners out of paper scraps—even glitter paper!  I chose how long I wanted them to be, traced them out, and cut.  I used the WRMK Trim and Score Board to cut the straight edge lines and trimmed the others with my Crafter’s Small Precision Scissors.  It was pretty easy, too!

After adhering the banners to the front of my smaller pocket, I turned it over and glued a paper clip to the back.  (But not before I added a lavender tassel to the clip!  I made this in less than 2 minutes using the Tassel Loom, and it’s such a cute addition to my pocket clip!)

You can choose the placement that works best for you for your paperclip; I wanted this pocket to go on the right-hand pages of my journal.

The large journal pocket is also clipped on; however, I chose not to glue the paperclip to this one.  Instead, I used it as the paperclip is intended, securing it to the page by sliding the clip down the backside of the pocket.  It works either way, but it means I can change it out easier if I want to switch colors or patterned papers.

Inside the pockets are samples of trims I use frequently on projects—thread, tulle, and seam binding.  I put them on white cards and (to me) it’s aesthetically appealing—the different textures, order, and soft hues.  The colors were guided by the design on my journal pages and it’s a palette I’ve wanted to work with for several months.  With my cute pocket clips, I can keep these tactile bits on hand and get them out when I’m in need of inspiration.

I used the Journal Guide again to make some short lists so I don’t forget what I want to do with these trims and to keep a few notes on the colors.  I can go back later and add my favorite embroidery floss color numbers, seam binding names, thread spool skews, etc.

Just for fun, I made one last clip with the Guide.  I created a long banner with glitter and patterned papers, tracing them using the bracket stencils again.  I spelled ‘TRIMS’ with the Word Punch Board and after adhering the papers together, I affixed them to another paper clip and attached it to my journal spread.

The Journal Guide came in so handy for this project and having these clip-on pockets that can easily be moved around is a must for the convenience factor.  I can’t wait to refer back to these pages again and again when I need color inspiration or a reminder about different trims and finishes to use.  I’ll definitely be making more pockets and pages like this for other color palettes, too!  What fun things would you put in YOUR pocket clips?
