Envelope Advent Calendar

Happy Friday friends! It’s your blog hostess, Aly Dosdall, here to share my version of a Christmas Countdown using some new papers from the DIY Party Collection, and one of my most-used crafting tools, the Envelope Punch Board.

This advent calendar was easy to make. I simply followed the instructions on the board to make 25 different sizes and shapes of envelopes using the DIY Party 12×12 Patterned Paper Pad. I have a certain amount of space to hang them above my fireplace, so I kept the envelopes to 3 1/2 inches wide or less. Then I cut some numbers with my Cameo using gold cardstock from the new DIY Party collection 12×12 Cardstock Pad. I hung my envelopes on green striped baker’s twine using mini wooden clothespins.

In our family we do an advent calendar each December for the 25 days leading up to Christmas. We do fun seasonal activities as a family all month long, so the purpose of our advent calendar is to help our family focus on what the Christmas holiday means to us.

Each envelope is filled with a slip of paper that contains an advent scripture verse, an inspirational Christmas quote, or the title of an inspirational video to watch. We gather as a family each night and take turns pulling out the paper from that day’s envelope. We do our advent reading (or watch our video) with all the lights off except the Christmas tree, and then each of the kids gets to pick a small treat from our advent treat basket.

This has become one of our favorite Christmas activities! Our whole family looks forward to it each year.

My name is Kimberly Crawford and I love paper. And really cool tools to use with paper! I have been paper crafting for many years now. I currently design for several manufacturers and teach classes at Big Picture Classes. I have been published frequently in books and magazines, including international publications. When I am not creating, my husband of 16 years and I take our 9 year old son to all his activities, and feel like we should move in to the pool where he spends most of his time as a competitive swimmer. Our cat doesn’t seem to mind we are gone often, as long as we feed him well (read that as treats) and let him sleep on our bed.

Favorite WRMK Product: I am a big fan of all the WRMK tools, but my favorite, the tool I use constantly, is the Brad Setter and Piercing Tool! Not only do I use it to pierce holes, but it is also my extra hand for holding things down. It is also fantastic for removing paper from my die templates!

Favorite paper crafting tip: This one is from my husband and I love it. He says, “It’s paper. Cut it. Use it. Try your idea out. Use the pretty paper and make something that makes you happy!” He’s a keeper!

Thanks Banner

The WRMK Banner Punch Board makes creating festive banners so easy! I was thrilled at how quickly this banner came together! The unexpected surprise to the tool for me was the hole punch built in at the top! It pierces perfectly lined up holes for the string!

The toughest part of this project was choosing which beautiful papers from the Wildflower Collection! The papers I used spoke to me of Thanksgiving. I have golds, burlaps, and many branches in my décor for that time of year, so this motif fit in perfectly. I cannot wait to hang it up over the buffet in our dining room!

Giving Thanks Wall Hanging

With more Thanksgiving décor in mind, I saw this dark wood frame in my stash of frames. It coordinated perfectly with the papers from the Wild Flower Collection. I layered paper on the back, a simple ledger design.

Then I used the Banner Punch Board to create the flag shape banner again. I layered the banners inside each frame part. I added tags trimmed from patterned paper and some beautiful foiled die cut flowers. I also used the Type Writer chipboard stickers to spell out giving. This is also going to look great in my house for Thanksgiving!

Thank you WRMK for having me guest design!

And thanks to you Kimberly for being our guest today. =)

Peace On Earth Card

One thing I love about the gorgeous Silver and Gold collection is that not only does it include traditional greens and reds for the holidays, but it also includes some less expected but just as beautiful colors. Of course it has silver and gold, but I love the unexpected chalkboard black, kraft, and robin’s egg blue colors as well. Here’s a holiday card I made focusing on some of the more non-traditional colors in the collection.

Peace On Earth Card by Aly Dosdall

For this card I stuck with the blue, white, gold, and kraft colors. I love the soft feel of them when combined with the gold–perfect for the holidays. And the crisp white reminds me of newly fallen snow.

I used the Wreath Frame Die to house my die cut sentiment, drawing attention to it. Laurel wreaths are a hot trend to watch for this holiday season–love them! I embellished the wreath with some gold sequins for a little sparkle, and included a pop of red at the top with some twine and a gem. My sentiment combines three different fonts–a script font and two tall and skinny fonts. Combining different fonts is a great way to add visual interest to any project.

So what do you think of the Silver and Gold collection so far? Do you like traditional or non-traditional holiday colors? Share your favorite holiday color schemes in the comments section below.
