Throwback Thursday: Halloween Door Hanger

For today’s Throwback Thursday we are going way back to fall of 2012 when we released the spooky Black Widow collection. I love the sophisticated macabre feel to this collection, and the combination of the traditional orange, white, and black with the unexpected brown is just super cool. Since it makes me giddy to use up my stash I decided to use scraps from this collection to create a Halloween Door Hanger to put on our front porch Halloween night so that trick-or-treaters know we’re home and ready for them.

Halloween Door Hanger by Aly Dosdall

I started by creating the door hanger base from a 12 x 12 inch piece of chipboard. I trimmed it to 4 x 10 inches and then cut a piece of black spider web patterned paper the same size. I used the Magnetic Circle Cutter to cut a 2 1/2″ hole in the top center of the chipboard and paper, and then I adhered them together.  I added a piece of Gold Metallic Washi Tape to the top and then rounded the corners with my 1/2″ & 1/4″ Corner Chomper.

Next I created my sentiment. I used my electronic die cutting machine to cut most of the words from orange patterned paper, but to mix things up a bit and to create a bit more interest in the sentiment, I die cut the word “DARE” from Sheer Metallic Gold Cardstock using the High Rise Alphabet Die and then added a Black Widow layered chipboard sticker that says, “BEWARE”.

I added an embossed chandelier sticker and a few gold sequins as accents to complement the gold washi tape. I love the gold trend for fall projects this year, and it refreshes the Black Widow collection perfectly. Mixing old and new is a great way to go!

Washi Tape Rosettes

I love the way paper rosettes dress up a project with texture and beauty. But how about dressing up your rosettes? There are several ways to add a little something extra to rosettes, but one easy way is to add some washi tape like I did with these Washi Tape Rosettes.

I started by trimming strips of plain white cardstock and punching the edges of some with 2 Edge Punches. Then I added a strip of copper Metallic Washi Tape, and scored the strips at every 1/4″.

Then I accordion folded the strips and hot glued the ends together. I placed some hot glue onto small punched circles and pressed the accordion folded pieces over the glue.

To finish off the rosettes I added enamel dots to the centers. These rosettes are great for scrapbook pages, cards, tags, or gifts. Try mixing different colors of washi tape for a fun and playful look.

Metallic Frame

I love to use my scrapbook supplies to make decor pieces for my home.  It makes me feel better about my growing stash of supplies!  So, I decided to create a fresh decor piece using my favorite new We R collection–Sheer Metallic.

I love the metallic trend in fashion, decor, and crafting right now and I wanted to put a different twist on it, so I used some cork board as my background.  I love the contrast created with the earthy cork texture and the metallic vellum!

The metallic textured cardstock included in the Sheer Metallic Vellum Pad provides a nice solid background for the layers of metallic vellum paper and the wooden tag.  I also added some Metallic Washi Tape strips as additional layers.

I love how well the vellum layers–it adds such interesting texture and dimension with its semi-transparent quality.  What do you think about the Sheer Metallic collection?  Are you a vellum or metallic fan?
