How to Make Wood Napkin Rings for Thanksgiving

Hello We R Fans! Kimberly here today with a great project that adds a touch of décor for your Thanksgiving table! In the crazy of all the preparations that lead to the feast, time is short. But, I still love to add special touches to the table.

With hand-lettered and hand-drawn touches, these napkin rings are incredibly quick and easy to make!

The Singe Quill Pen is meant to be placed into the pen tool slot of your digital die cutting machine. However, as my dining room table is currently set up for Thanksgiving dinner, and not crafting, I chose to use the Singe Quill Pen-Fine like a standard pen. I wrote the word thankful on a piece of the Singe Quill wood ephemera pieces. Now, the ink is translucent which means you can see it just barely as you work. It is enough though.

Once the word was written, I used the Singe Quill Tool to apply heat to the surface of the wood piece. This will take a minute or two. As more heat is applied, the writing will become darker and darker.

Some safety tips:

  • Use the tool on a heat-safe surface.
  • Do NOT touch the wood piece during the heating process and after for a minute or two.
  • Do NOT touch the end of the heating tool.
  • Keep the Singe Quill Tool moving slowly around the surface of the wood piece.

How lovely is this? Once I had created the banner with the word, I knew it needed something more substantial to hold it to a napkin. So, I chose to layer it on another piece of wood ephemera. (also note the hole at the top-easier for tying around a napkin)

The wood surface is unfinished, allowing you to add color. I choose to add a mustard color of ink to mine. Set the piece aside for a while to allow the ink to dry.

The wood circle needed a little something extra. Always being a fan of adding gold to pretty much everything, I grabbed my Freestyle Foil Quill Pen and a piece of gold foil.

Securing the foil in place with a piece of washi, I drew a circle and leaves on the wood. I found the slower I drew through the foil, the better the transfer results were.

I glued the two pieces together and tied them to a napkin. Simple. Easy. Quick. However, it’s a special touch because I made it. Those small touches are what add warmth and love to any celebration.

DIY December Planner with the Singe Quill

Hello We R fans! It’s Aly here with you today and I’m extra excited to share this project with you. Have you heard of the new Quill Kits? They work with your electronic cutting machine to do all kinds of cool things to take your craft projects to the next level. Check out how I made a DIY December Planner with the Singe Quill and my Silhouette Cameo 3!DIY December Planner with the Singe Quill by Aly Dosdall for We R Memory Keepers

December is a fun and super busy month. I find keeping things organized with lists and specific plans helps me to enjoy the season more and stress less. So, I decided to make a special December planner where I can keep track of my shopping, baking, and to do lists.

I divided my planner into four sections: to buy, to bake, to watch, to do. I included tabbed dividers that I made with patterned paper from the DCWV Inc Christmas Nutcracker paper stack. In between each divider is some blank white paper where I can take notes, write down ideas, record memories, or attach photos. Take a look at each divider inside the planner:

I created the covers and some of the embellishments with the Singe Quill, some Singe Quill Wood Sheets, Singe Quill ephemera, my Cameo 3, and some artwork from the Holidays USB Design Drive. Here’s how I did it:

Place an 8×8 sheet of Singe Quill Wood in the center of your cutting mat. Be sure to check the clearance on your machine (how thick the material can be to fit in). Move the rollers out of the way, or place the wood sheet on your mat so it doesn’t go under the rollers.

Prepare your design in your software. Select the Fine or Bold Tip Singe Quill, insert it into the appropriate adapter according to the included instruction booklet. Place your adapter and Singe Quill into your machine following the sketch or draw instructions for your machine.

Send your artwork to the machine and watch the Singe Quill do the work! You won’t be able to see the design that the quill is drawing. It’s applying a clear chemical that we will singe once it’s done.

Once your design is finished, remove your mat, take the wood sheet off the mat and singe the design with the Singe Quill Heat Gun. You can also follow the instructions to singe the wood in the oven.

I bound the covers, dividers, and paper together with The Cinch binding tool. It went right through the wood covers, no problem. (Tip: be sure to leave about a 1 inch margine on the left side of your covers for binding.) I added these to the four tabbed divider pages, and the blank white paper and then cinched it all together with 1″ gold Cinch Wire.

Then I used the Singe Quill to write custom words and phrases on some wood ephemera pieces that came in the kit. I wanted to include some of my own handwriting, but you can do this with your cutting machine as well.

Here’s a closer look at the first tabbed divider:

I made a coin envelope with The Works All In One Tool. This is where I’ll keep my receipts in case I need to return anything from my Christmas shopping list.

Here’s a close up of the second tabbed divider:

Baking is one of our family Christmas traditions, so I’ll keep our favorite recipes handy here in this pocket, and add new ones I collect as well. By the way, I made the folded tabs with The Works All In One Tool.

It’s so nice to have one tool that I can pull out to make all the things!

Take a look at the third tabbed divider:

The last two sections are for recording our favorite holiday movies and activities, and keeping track of which ones we’ve watched or done. I made two check lists with the All In One Journal Guide.

Then I added them to the last two tabbed dividers along with some Singe Quill ephemera. We’ll write down our favorite holiday movies on one list, and our favorite holiday family activities on the other. Then, as we do them I’ll check them off and we can use the blank white paper to write what we liked/didn’t like about the activities. I can also store photos and stories from our holiday adventures. Here’s tabbed divider number 4:

I added a few final touches to my planner. The first was a pom pom and tassel planner charm that I made with The Works All In One Tool. I’ve already said it, and I’ll say it again: I LOVE having one tool that can do SO many things. Less mess in my craft room!

The other final touches were some water color paint and some glitter that I added with the Glue Quill. I love the bit of holiday color and sparkle these details add!

I love how it turned out! I think the singed wood covers are super cool, and they were so easy to make with the Singe Quill and my Cameo.
