Handmade Gift Idea: Holiday Candles

Hello We R Fans! Not only are the holidays my favorite time of year, but this is also my favorite crafting time of year! Its time to make thoughtful, handmade gifts for those special people in our lives. One of my favorite tools from We R Memory Keepers this year was the Wick Candle Maker.

Gift Handmade Candles as gifts for the holidays with the Wick Candles Maker! Project and photo by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers.

Best part is, while making unique and custom candles is easy with the Wick, everyone loves receiving a candle! There is something warm and inviting about a candle. I cannot wait to give these candles as gifts this season!

Recently, We R Memory Keepers released new silicone molds to allow you to make shaped candles. I could not love the design of these geometric shapes any more if I tried!

These three new molds are easy to use and very cleverly designed. The large plastic mold that comes with the Wick Candle Maker, helps hold these flexible pieces in place while creating the candle. The other thing I really liked about these silicone molds was the instructions that came with them. It explains how much more wax to melt to completely fill the mold. I was nervous to fill them to the top at first, but after the first candle turned out so beautifully, I was thrilled!

Each of these candles has a unique color, which was the look I wanted. I know that I will be giving these candles to my sister, and this color palette is perfect for her! The Wick Candle Maker comes with colored wax flakes and a color mixing chart, so the sky is the limit!

Gift Handmade Candles as gifts for the holidays with the Wick Candles Maker! Project and photo by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers.

To make the candles, I put the wax into the top of the Wick and then add the color flakes. Once that is all melted, I stir the color in carefully with a wood skewer. As I stir, I make sure and scrape along the sides and bottom of the basin. If you mix and do not like the color, simply add more color flakes.

Another way to customize these candles, and making them truly special for the recipient, is by adding scent. We R Memory Keepers has four different scent kits for sale. You can also add any essential oils you have as well. Add the scent in the beginning as you start to melt the wax.

Once the mold is assembled with the wick and stopper, place it inside the large plastic mold. When the wax has melted and the color is what you desire, open the spigot at the bottom and fill the mold. After the wax has set (wait until it is not warm anymore) the candles can easily be removed from the molds. It was really easy to remove. I peeled the candles out by pulling at the sides and basically turning the molds inside out.

To make these gifts even more special, I used the 123 Punch Board and the DCWV White Christmas stack to create boxes for each of the candles. To determine the box size, I measured the candles.

Wire Wrapped Holiday Candles

Hello and Happy Friday! It’s Aly here again and I’ve got a cool hostess gift idea to share. I’ve seen some really cool wire crafts making their way around the interwebs and I love how wire can be incorporated into just about any project. I decided to make some holiday candles with my Wick Candle Maker, and throw some Happy Jig wire at them to see what happened.

Wire Wrapped Holiday Candles by Aly Dosdall for We R Memory Keepers

The combination of handmade candles and wire designs make for a unique hostess gift set. I started by making some candles with my Wick and the new Silicone Molds. I added some delicious holiday scents, and went with traditional red and green colors for the candles.

Wire Wrapped Holiday Candles by Aly Dosdall for We R Memory Keepers

Important tips: 1) remind your recipient to remove the paper gift tag before lighting the candles; 2) The Wick Wire is not flammable but it does get hot near a flame, so use caution.

Once I finished the candles, I selected some holiday designs from the Happy Jig Instagram account (@werhappyjig) and used the free templates available there. I first chose the star design for my green diamond shaped candle, and I altered it slightly to look more like a holiday star. Here’s the template I ended up using.

Happy Jig Holiday Star

I left a lot of excess wire so I could wrap it around the candle. I used a household object in a cone shape (funnel) to wrap the wire around so I didn’t scratch and scuff up the candle in the process.

step out 2_wrap wire around cone shape

When I finished wrapping, I cut off the extra and gently slipped the formed wire spiral over the candle.

Next, I selected the reindeer head design for my red sphere candle. I made the reindeer head exactly as it is found on the @werhappyjig Instagram account, except I started and finished my wire down at the bottom of the design. Here’s the template I used:

Happy Jig Deer Head

Once I finished the reindeer head I wrapped the extra wire around a tennis ball (since it’s the same size as the sphere shaped candle) and trimmed it. Then I slipped it gently over my candle.

To finish off my candles, I added some gift tags that I cut out from the DCWV Red and White Christmas Premium Stack.

I used my Sticky Piercer to make a small hole in each tag, and then tied them onto the wire around the candles with some American Crafts Twine.

During the holidays most of our dinner parties are with extended family, so I can’t wait to share these with my sister-in-law! I think she’s going to love them. Thanks for stopping by, and have a awesome and crafty weekend friends!

DIY Thanksgiving Table Centerpiece

Hello everyone!  It’s Eva here today bringing you a tutorial on how to make a Thanksgiving Centerpiece using the Wick Candle Maker and the Globe Punch.

DIY Thanksgiving Table Centerpiece by Eva Pizarro for We R Memory Keepers

Here in Chile it is almost summer so I wanted to create  a fall centerpiece but with fun and bright colors! I started by creating pumpkins with my Globe Punch. I added some turquoise to my color palette to add a summery feeling.

We R Memory Keepers DIY Party Globe Punch

The Globe Punch is really easy to use and you can use this shape for so many things!

After you have punched your paper you will need to interlock the hooks on the bottom and the top sides of the pumpkin.  If you want you can squeeze the globe a bit to give it a nice pumpkin shape.

We R Memory Keepers DIY Party Globe Punch

Embellish your pumpkin with some green wire from your Happy Jig and a little piece of paper straw.

Use your USB Power Mini Glue Gun to attach everything on top of your pumpkin.

Using your Happy Jig and some gold wire, create the “Thankful” word. I used the word “Thanks” from the booklet as my base and just added the last few letters from other words I found on the Happy Jig Instagram account here: @werhappyjig.

We R Memory Keepers Happy Jig

I also used my Wick Candle Maker and a silicone mold to create an orange candle.  It was fun and easy to create the candle and with zero spills! The silicon molds are gorgeous and create perfect candles that would make great Christmas gifts!

DIY Summer Candles

Hello WeR fans and welcome! It’s Chantalle with you again and I can’t wait to share some candle décor ideas with you, which I’ve created with my Wick Candle Maker.

As we approach (a thankfully comparably mild) winter Down Under, this little beach-inspired scene reminds me that summer is not that far away.

DIY Summer Candles by Chantalle McDaniel for We R Memory Keepers

I’ve created three style of candle, all using the Wick machine, paraffin beads and a splash of colouring.

DIY Summer Candles by Chantalle McDaniel for We R Memory Keepers

These candles were really fun to make and turned out even better than I expected. I love the fact that they are personal to my family and the shells are from the estuary only meters from our home.

DIY Summer Candles by Chantalle McDaniel for We R Memory Keepers

The two cylindrical shaped candles are from the smooth mold that comes in the candle making kit. One ties off some wick material onto a metal rod, which balances across the top of the mold, then you pull the wick material through the hole at the bottom of the mold, then pop a rubber stopper into the hole, securing the wick material and preventing the melted wax from escaping.

For my candle on display in the glass votive, I created an ombré effect by adding a brown wax crayon. This was the first time I had used a solid colour to colour my wax melts. I also tried adding some mists and paint but the liquids didn’t mix properly with the wax and settled awkwardly at the bottom of the mold as well as my Wick machine and were tricky to clean.

The wax crayon melted into a rich colour and if you want an ombré effect, it’s great as I found the consistency must’ve been denser as it settled to the bottom very well.

DIY Summer Candles by Chantalle McDaniel for We R Memory Keepers

A convenient function the Wick machine has, is an indicator light that illuminates when the valve is opened. This is handy as I sometimes forget to close the valve after I had made a candle. It’s a great reminder to quickly shut it before the new melted wax comes running out!

Wick Candle Maker by We R Memory Keepers

Here you can see the finished brown candle. It takes about one and a half refills of the machine to fill this size mold. The first round was the dark wax with the wax crayon added. The second layer was diluted slightly with more plain wax melts. The top layer was a new batch of plain melts, with a touch of the blue colour shavings you get in the kit along with the machine. One thing I have mentioned before is that it’s totally normal for your candle to sink a bit during the setting process. I now know to keep an extra amount of the last colour used, to reheat in the machine and then top the candle up if necessary. I will also mention that these candles I set in the fridge. It made them much easier to get out of the mold.

DIY Summer Candles by Chantalle McDaniel for We R Memory Keepers

Moving on to the next style of candle are these shelled beauties! I love these little babies and will definitely be making these as gifts!

One can purchase small wicks with the metal stabilizer online, but I tried my hand at upcycling some existing wicks in the form of tea lights, which I had on hand.

I cut up the candles carefully and extracted the wicks. I then popped the wax into my Wick to melt it. Once I was happy with how I had placed the wicks inside the shells, I placed the shells very carefully under the valve on the machine and opened it just a tiny bit to allow the wax to just drop out very gently.

Wick Candle Maker by We R Memory Keepers

Voila! These are addictive to make so be warned lol!

DIY Summer Candles by Chantalle McDaniel for We R Memory Keepers

My third style of candle is one with a photo personalization. I looked up how to do it online and it involved printing a photo onto tissue paper.

I stuck the tissue down to regular copy paper and the fed it into my very trusty inkjet printer. I’d measured the size of the candle and created an image box in a word processing programme. I then printed the image off using a ‘speciality paper’ setting on the printer.

I was nervous as to how the printer would go, printing on to such delicate paper but it worked great! I cut the tissue photo out and placed it, image side up, around the candle. You’ll notice this candle is also kinda ombré in colour. The bottom bit was left over melted tea light candle with a bit of blue colour shavings added. I topped the candle up with the Wick paraffin melts and blue shavings and, as you can see, the consistency of the two types of waxes is different. I really like it.

Wick Candle Maker by We R Memory Keepers

In order to transfer the image onto the candle itself, I then wrapped the whole thing  in baking paper and heated it with my heat gun. You can see I used BBQ tongs to hold it while I heated it to protect my hands.

As the wax heats, you will see the paper darken. Once you’ve got the whole paper dark, you can go ahead and peel the baking paper away slowly. (You may need to keep heating gently as you do this step, just see how you go.)

And here is my photo candle. This family photo was taken on a gorgeous Gold Coast beach inside a beach cave. I really like how the texture of the candle echoes the rocks!

DIY Candle Thank You Gift

Hello WeR fans and welcome! It’s Chantalle with you again and I have to just say, you seriously have to check out the new Wick Candle Maker and the Happy Jig. These two tools are simply out-of-this-world-fun to use and are the focus of the thank you gift I have created, which I can’t wait to show you!

I’ve never made a candle before so I was SO excited to see it come out of the mold and two colours no less!! Lol. My first instinct was to smell it, kinda expecting it to smell like citrus, so that is my next experiment – infusing the wax!

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers

The mason jar serves two purposes: ready-made packaging for my candle and also as a votive for it when lit.

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers
The jar already had an embossed pattern so I’ve kept the embellishments minimal.  The word ‘thanks’ can be removed and reused if necessary. It would make a fun bookmark if popped onto some cardstock or could become a title for a scrapbook page!

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers

To make my candle, I started off by reading the instructions that came with the Wick machine. One pops a rubber stopper into the base of your chosen mold, then ties off some wick material onto the metal rod, which balances across the top of the mold.

Next, I added some wax material to the receptacle as well as some colouring. I added red and yellow to get orange. There is no precise way to get an exact match, but it is easy to trial and error as you go to create the shade you are after.

The wax takes about 20 mins to melt completely, but we still have warmer weather so that time is a guide I guess, depending on temps inside your workspace and how much wax you want to melt etc.

Once the wax was totally melted, I opened the little valve and it came running out into the mold.

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers

I wanted to create an ombré effect so I filled it up about ¾ and then melted more wax (this time with less red) and then filled the mold some more. It is important to let your wax dry before you add the next layer. I put mine under the aircon to cool, but you could also put it in the fridge. Another thing that happened to me was that the centre of the candle sank in a bit. This is very common and mentioned in the instructions. If this happens to you, simply pop some holes around the wick area before pouring a bit more melted wax into the area to top it up.

NOTE: It’s best to let your candle set overnight before removing it from the mold.

Another tip would be to cool or heat the mold a bit if you are having trouble removing the candle when it’s set.

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers

Here you can see the finished product! I’m thrilled with how it turned out. How awesome it is going to be to be able to make this kind of home made gift for someone you care about!

I have placed a bit of melted wax into the lid of the jar and then pushed the candle into it to act like a glue, so it’s doesn’t move around too much inside the jar.

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers

The jar itself has been embellished with some Pink Paislee Summer Lights Cardstock Stickers. These stickers are awesome as they have some holographic foil elements!

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers

I mimicked the smaller hexagonal shapes with my Hexagon Clear Cut Punch. The one bigger size helps create balance.

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers

To create the word ‘Thanks’ I grabbed my Happy Jig and set up the guides, ready for the wire. Overall, the word turned out OK. It’s easy to get a couple of areas that don’t look perfect (a bit of stretching can occur when pulling off the Happy Jig guides) I just us my little pairs of pliers that came with my Cinch Binding Tool and tweaked the word here and there.

We R Memory Keepers Happy Jig
To add a bit of extra sparkle to my jar, I have threaded some little beads onto the wire. I’ve also added a plastic die cut feather as well as a paper feather die cut shape.

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers

These feather shapes have been cut using my Evolution Advanced along with my magnetic mat.

I snipped a tiny hole into the top of the paper feather, which made it a lot easier to add to the wire word.

DIY Candle Thank You Gift by Chantalle McDaniels for We R Memory Keepers
The Happy Jig is such a fun tool to own. The instructional booklet is full of ideas and easy-to-follow instructions to create both shapes and paperclip options.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Be sure to tag @wermemorykeepers in your social media posts so we can enjoy seeing you get your craft on! Thank you so much for stopping by. Happy gifting!

Tropical Fruit Scented Candles

Hello We R friends! It’s Aly here again, and I’m excited to share some candles I made as a gift for some dear friends of mine with my new Wick Candle Maker. I grabbed some old dollar mason jars I had in my stash and turned them into Tropical Fruit Scented Candles: a pineapple, a strawberry, and a peach.

Tropical Fruit Scented Candles by Aly Dosdall for We R Memory Keepers featuring the Wick Candle Maker

Since I got my Wick Candle Making Kit, my girls and I have starting making gifts for friends and it’s been so much fun! The Wick is simple and safe enough that I feel totally comfortable including young crafters in the process, which I love.

Tropical Fruit Scented Candles by Aly Dosdall for We R Memory Keepers

My mason jars are pint size (16 oz) and don’t fit under the Wick machine, but that’s no problem! You can totally use larger containers with your Wick. All I had to do was fill the small mold to the max line twice and that filled the inside of the jars perfectly. Tip: measure with water ahead of time to see how many molds fit into your container. After filling the heating chamber to the max line with the included wax pellets, I measured out the pigment powder so I used the same ratio for both pours into the mold. That way the colors match exactly.

https://app.box.com/folder/48027691073

I set the heat on high, and waited about 20 minutes for the wax to melt. While waiting, I decorated the outside of my  pineapple jar with washi tape that I cut into thin chevron shapes with my Washi Chomper.

For the strawberry jar, I added black dots from leftover punctuation and letter stickers.

Then I added the wick to my jars using the tip from Kimberly in THIS POST. Once the wax melted I added 3-4 drops of fruit scented frangrance oil and stirred the melted wax thoroughly.

We R Memory Keepers Wick Candle Maker

Then I opened the valve and allowed the wax to pour into the mold. While it was still hot, I carefully poured it into my jar and then started on the next batch of wax, following the above steps. I recommend wiping out the mold with paper towels after the first pour while the wax is still melted. It’s much easier to clean the mold that way.

Tip
: wax shrinks slightly when it cools, so you will notice the center of your candle caves in slightly. Hold back some wax so you can top off your candle once the second batch dries and fill it in.

While the second batch of wax cooled, I decorated the jar lids. I started by painting them green. I used three different greens to add a little interest to the set.

While the paint dried, I cut out leaves for the pineapple, strawberry, and peach candles. Once the paint dried completely, I hot glued the two parts of the lid together, and then hot glued the leaves on each lid with the USB Mini Glue Gun.

For the peach candle I wanted to try using scented wax melts from my local craft store. I found some peach scented ones but the color was darker than I wanted, so I mixed in some French vanilla melts along with a little yellow pigment from my Wick kit. I love how it turned out!

We R Memory Keepers Wick Candle Maker with scented wax melts

Be sure to clean out the heating chamber in between candles. I found it easiest to turn the heat down to low once I finished a candle, and then wipe out the heating chamber with paper towels. That way the wax is still melted and easy to wipe, but the chamber isn’t so hot.

Pineapple Scented Candles by Aly Dosdall for We R Memory Keepers featuring the Wick Candle Maker

I’d love to try some soy wax, bees wax, and adding dried flowers or pot pourri to my next set of candles. It’s so much fun, and there are so many possibilities!

Pineapple Candles

Hello We R Fans! Kimberly here today. The Wick candle machine is one cool new tool! But, then again, We R Memory Keepers always knocks it out of the park with its tools! Honestly, I was not sure about making candles. I am crafty, but more paper-crafty, than crafty-crafty. That has changed. I am hooked! The Wick is easy to use, easy to clean, and both of those things add up to pure crafting fun!

Pineapple Candles by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers

The Wick allows you to make pillar candles using molds. Three different molds come with the Wick, which is cool. But I had a crazy idea to try out. I wanted to use small jars and create candles that look like pineapples.

Pineapple Candles by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers

I am obsessed with pineapples and our guest bedroom is getting a redesign. Perfect time to make my own décor to match my theme.

Pineapple Candles by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers

The Wick has a unique and clever system for adding the wick when you use the molds, but when I wanted to use a decorative jar, a separate item from the box, I had to get creative. Digging through my stash, I found some Sticky Thumb Adhesive Dots. I placed one on the cotton wick material, provided in the box, and placed it in the bottom of my small jar. (The wick holding metal stick was helpful for reaching the bottom of the jar.)

Pineapple Candles by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers

I already had my wax and color melted in the Wick, so, carefully holding the cotton wick string, I opened the pour valve slightly and let a few drops of wax come out to cover the bottom of the jar. By doing this, I could help set the wick in place. I allowed the wax to cool for a few minutes and then tied my cotton wick string around the metal stick to keep it in the center.

Pineapple Candles by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers

I finished pouring the rest of the wax on top and created the bottom layer of my “pineapple.” I set it aside to cool completely before adding the next layer of green.

Wick Candle Maker by We R Memory Keepers

The Wick comes with packets of dye flakes to change the color of the wax. Because I wanted green, I used yellow and blue. There is a handy color chart included with the Wick to help you determine how much of the coloring to add. A small amount of flakes are needed for vivid colors.

Pineapple Candles by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers

Another cool thing you can add to your wax are oils. You can add scents! After searching online, I found pineapple essential oil. Yes, I did! Add a few drops to your wax once it is melted and enjoy custom scents!

Pineapple Candles by Kimberly Crawford for We R Memory Keepers

When the pour valve is open, the wax streams out into your jar, or mold. It will stop coming out when it is finished. Once it is emptied, simply wipe the top out with a paper towel and its ready for your next candle. (Please be careful as the edges are still hot.)

How fun are these “pineapple” candles? I cannot wait to try more styles, colors, and scents! What color candle would you make first?

DIY Geometric Candles

Hello everyone!  It’s Eva here today bringing you a tutorial on how to make geometric candles using the Wick Candle Maker and the Triangle Score Guide.

Geometric Candles with the Wick Candle Maker by Eva PIzarro for We R Memory Keepers

As soon as I received the Wick Candle MakerI knew what kind of candle I wanted to create! I love geometric shapes and I thought it would be fun to use the Triangle Score Guide to make molds for my candles.

This was my first time making candles and it was very fun and easy! The Wick Candle Maker kit has everything you need to make candles: paraffin wax, cotton wicks, pigment powder and 3 candle molds with a removable bottom so the candles are easy to remove.

To begin simply place the paraffin wax in the Wick Candle Maker. Add pigment powder and scent and turn it on. It takes 10-15 minutes for the paraffin to melt. Once it is done simply use a skewer to mix everything.

Tip: Start with your lighter colors first, that way if you have some spare wax you can add another pigment and create another color.

Geometric Candles with the Wick Candle Maker by Eva PIzarro for We R Memory Keepers

Use your Triangle Score Guide and your Trim and Score Board to create your geometric paper molds. The triangle Score Guide comes with a booklet with instructions for several shapes.

Trim and Score Board by We R Memory KeepersTriangle Score Guide by We R Memory Keepers

I decided to make a pyramid, an octahedron, a tetrahedron, and a tube shape like one I did for this Geometric planter years ago. I used my Crafter’s Essential USB Glue Gun to create my geometric shapes and added extra glue to all the creases. You could also add a coat of paint or a sealant to prevent leaking.

USB Glue Gun by We R Memory Keepers

Cut your wick to the desired length and knot it to the metal rod. Place the wick inside the mold and fill the candle

Geometric Candles with the Wick Candle Maker by Eva PIzarro for We R Memory Keepers

To fill the candle simply open the valve. I suggest you add a small amount of melted wax and see if you have any leaks. A small leak can be solved by putting the candle in the fridge. The wax will cool and will seal the leak.

Geometric Candles with the Wick Candle Maker by Eva PIzarro for We R Memory Keepers

Remove your candle from the Wick and let it cool until it is completely room temperature.

Geometric Candles with the Wick Candle Maker by Eva PIzarro for We R Memory Keepers

Because wax shrinks when it is cold your candle will probably cave in in the center and you will need to add a small amount of wax at the end to even the candle.

What I did was pour a small amount of wax into a baby jar and when my candle was dry I heated the jar on a pot with water and added the melted wax. It is important to keep the same candle mix because it is very hard to recreate the same candle color!

Geometric Candles with the Wick Candle Maker by Eva PIzarro for We R Memory Keepers

Finally, once your candles are dry, tear off the paper and use your Crafter’s knife to clean up the edges.

Geometric Candles with the Wick Candle Maker by Eva PIzarro for We R Memory Keepers

Add different color layers to make your candles different! You can make ombre candles, rainbow candles and even add glitter or dried flowers to your mix!

Geometric Candles with the Wick Candle Maker by Eva PIzarro for We R Memory Keepers

And here are my final candles! This was my first time making candles and it was a lot of fun! The geometric molds worked out great and I love the vibrant pigment colors of my candles! The Wick Candle Maker made the job very easy and with almost zero spills!
